WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL

AND CRANIOSACRAL FASCIAL THERAPY?

Craniosacral and Craniosacral Fascial Therapy is light touch therapy that enables the body to release tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction. The craniosacral system involves the cerebral spinal fluid, spinal cord and bones in the skull as well as the fascia (connective tissue) throughout the body.

The craniosacral and fascial system play an integral part of how well the nervous system functions. The system holds trauma from birth as well as physical and emotional traumas from throughout one's lifetime. In order to compensate, the membranes and liquid that surround the brain and spinal cord tighten causing tension that can cause a number of sensory, motor and neurological disorders. When tension is released, the whole body is able to achieve its greatest level of performance and health. This therapy is effective for everyone beginning at birth throughout one's lifetime.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You or your child will be lying on a padded massage table in loose comfortable clothing. Using a soft touch, which is generally no greater than 5 grams (about the weight of a nickel), I will be using subtle palpating and treatment techniques that support the wisdom of your body as it finds its own path to healing and wellness.

My hands will evaluate the craniosacral and fascial system by gently feeling various locations of the body to check for ease of motion, tightness and the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord.  The brain’s ability to expand and contract, which allows for the cerebral spinal fluid to be sent throughout the body, will also be evaluated.  Secondly, tightness is released not only in the craniosacral region but in the soft tissue areas as well that surround the central nervous system.  Once this is achieved, the body then shows where else tightness needs to be released and I will follow to support that release and healing.

Children may be lying on the floor, sitting up, or even moving around.  Favorite toys or objects of comfort are great to bring along but I do have toys in my office as well.

You may feel a sensation of floating or letting go. After a session, clients often feel deeply relaxed, like they have had a deep sleep even though they were awake during the treatment. Children may sleep through the treatment while others may be alert and even crawling around. Older children are usually comfortable lying on the table and relaxing. Children may be silent or vocal or sometimes cry.

After your session:

Immediately after a session most people feel blissfully relaxed. A reduction in pain or an increase in function and range of motion may happen immediately or gradually happen over the next few days or weeks. There may also be some general aches and pains that come and go for a few days after the session. Other people may feel a little emotional for a day or so after their session. Any uncomfortable sensations are temporary and are a part of your body releasing old patterns and tension which should not last for long.
